Radiant Barrier

Radiant Barrier Plywood - Tech Shield Roofing

A radiant heat barrier in your home will help control the amount of heat that enters or exits—reducing your energy consumption and costs.

In warm months, a large percentage of heat is "barred" from entering your home by the radiant barrier reflecting it away. As a result, your air conditioning unit doesn't have to work as hard and you benefit from a lower utility bill. Similarly, heating costs in colder months are reduced by having a radiant barrier, as it helps retain the heat by reflecting it back into the home.

Benefits of radiant barrier:

  • lowering your utility bills year-round
  • extending the lives of your air conditioning and heating units, as they won't have to work as hard
  • installing an energy-saving product means you're "going green"
  • increasing the value and appeal of your home
  • taking advantage of its lifetime warranty.

Dallas Radiant Barrier Installer ContractorHow much will you save on your utility bills by using a radiant barrier? Results vary, of course, based on several factors, including how much sunlight hits your roof, the level of insulation on windows/doors/walls, etc. but some customers report lowering their bills by 40%. One thing is guaranteed, the sooner it's installed, the more you will save—as it keeps on saving, month after month.

There are different products available to provide a radiant barrier and a variety of methods used.

Ways to install a radiant heat barrier:

As part of the roof decking

If you're re-roofing your building, we can install the radiant heat barrier with the roof decking. This stops the radiant heat as early as possible and preventing up to 75% of the heat from penetrating. The best news is that radiant barrier decking is not much more expensive than regular/plain roof decking.

Underneath the roof rafters

The most common method of installation, the advantage is that the roof, shingles, and decking are never touched so any building, regardless of roofing material, can take advantage of having a radiant barrier. Radiant foil is applied (usually stapled) to the underneath side of rafters. The building must have an attic for this type of installation.

On the attic floor, above the ceiling insulation

This is a good choice if pipes, wires, etc. make accessing the underneath side of rafters difficult. However, it is not as good as options one and two because the attic will be hotter, due to letting the heat penetrate the attic before it is reflected.

The least expensive method, it unfortunately is not as effective as options one, two, or three that utilize foil or decking. It is however, convenient as there is no concern about getting around wires, etc.
